How to Reduce Water Bill in an Apartment

Date: Oct 6, 2026
Reducing an apartment water bill starts with figuring out whether you pay for water directly, through a ratio utility billing system, or as part of rent. Typically, the biggest daily savings usually come from reduced usage of showers, toilets, faucets, laundry, and dishwashing.
Tips To Reduce Water Bill In An Apartment
- Take shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving, and do not let the faucet run while washing dishes. Run the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads, and choose efficient settings when available.
- Report leaks quickly. A dripping faucet, continuously running toilet, loose showerhead, or water around the toilet base can waste significant water. In an apartment, maintenance is often responsible for repairs, so document the issue with photos or a written request. If you notice a toilet refilling when no one has flushed it, report it promptly.
- Ask building or property management whether low-flow showerheads or fixtures are available.
- In the kitchen, rinse produce in a bowl rather than under a running tap, keep cold drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet until it cools, and thaw food in the refrigerator rather than under water.
- In the bathroom, use a basin for small hand-washing tasks and turn off the tap while applying soap.
Track your bill for two or three months after making changes. If use remains unusually high, request a meter check or ask whether there is a shared-meter or billing-calculation issue.
