How Much Money Do I Need Saved Per School Year?

Date: Oct 6, 2026
The amount of money you need saved per school year largely depends on the type of school you’re attending (college, community college, or trade school), personal spending habits, amount you expect to earn, and amount you already have saved. In short, you need enough saved to cover the school-year costs that grants, scholarships, reliable income, and other confirmed funding will not cover.
Calculate Your Savings Target
You can calculate your savings target in two steps:
- Start with your school’s cost of attendance for your program and enrollment status. This estimate should include tuition and fees, housing, food, books, supplies, transportation, and other living expenses — not just the school’s bill. Adjust it to reflect your actual circumstances.
- Then, subtract grants, scholarships, confirmed contributions, and take-home earnings you can reasonably expect during the year. Subtract loan funds only if you have decided to borrow; loans are financing, not savings, and generally require repayment.
As an example, suppose your total costs are $20,000. You have $8,000 in grants and scholarships and expect $6,000 in take-home earnings. Without loans or other support, your savings target would be $6,000, plus any extra you can manage.
Check When Money Is Needed
An annual total does not tell you how much cash you need before classes begin. Ask when tuition, deposits, books, and rent are due, and when financial aid becomes available.
Remember that work-study money arrives as you earn it, rather than being available upfront.
Also check whether your estimate covers the academic year or includes summer expenses. If the savings gap is too large, ask the financial aid office about additional assistance, payment plans, or lower-cost options before committing. A workable plan matters more than reaching an estimated savings number.
