List of Sinking Funds

Date: Oct 12, 2026
A useful list of sinking funds includes irregular expenses you actually expect, not every possible purchase. Start with a few categories that fit your needs and available money.
Choose Categories That Apply To You
Possible funds include:
- Annual fees or subscriptions
- Required training materials
- Clothing or equipment replacement
- Planned medical costs
- Gifts or celebrations
- Travel
- Pet expenses, if applicable
- Transportation costs you can anticipate
A sinking fund works best for a named expense you reasonably expect.
Start With A Short List
Choose one required expense and, if affordable, one optional goal. Combine small related expenses instead of maintaining many categories.
For example, saving $15 monthly for a $180 annual fee covers the estimate after twelve deposits, ignoring interest.
Record the target, date, current balance, and contribution. If categories share an account, check that their totals match actual savings.
If planned deposits exceed available money, prioritize urgent costs and revise the others. Do not create categories that make the budget look better funded than it is.
