Mortgage Credit Score vs Consumer Credit Score

Mortgage Credit Score vs Consumer Credit Score
A consumer credit score is one you can access; a mortgage credit score is one a lender uses. They can match, but different models, bureaus, or dates can produce different numbers.
Check the Score’s Label
FICO is a scoring brand, not one specific score. Classic mortgage FICO versions are 2, 4, and 5. Other versions may appear in consumer score services. [web:108]
Eligible Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans can also use VantageScore 4.0 under current requirements. Confirm which model your lender uses rather than assuming every mortgage uses Classic FICO. [web:74]
Make a Like-for-Like Comparison
Record three details whenever you receive a score:
- The scoring model and version
- The credit bureau supplying the information
- The date the score was calculated
For example, an Experian FICO Score 2 and a TransUnion score calculated a month earlier may differ because of both the model and the data.
A score in an app is not automatically wrong because it differs from a lender’s score. It may answer a different lending question.
Ask which version matters for your application before purchasing additional access. The label gives the number its context.
