Mortgage Score vs Credit Score

Mortgage Score vs Credit Score

Date: Oct 14, 2026

A mortgage score is a credit score used for a home-loan application. It is not a separate measure of your finances, but its model can differ from the score you normally see.

Check the Score’s Label

FICO is a scoring brand, not one specific score. Classic mortgage FICO versions are 2, 4, and 5. Other versions may appear in consumer score services.

Eligible Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans can also use VantageScore 4.0 under current requirements. Confirm which model your lender uses rather than assuming every mortgage uses Classic FICO.

Make a Like-for-Like Comparison

Record three details whenever you receive a score:

  • The scoring model and version
  • The credit bureau supplying the information
  • The date the score was calculated

For example, an Experian FICO Score 2 and a TransUnion score calculated a month earlier may differ because of both the model and the data.

A score in an app is not automatically wrong because it differs from a lender’s score. It may answer a different lending question.

Before purchasing additional access, ask which version matters for your application.
