Affordable Cities Where You Don’t Need a Car

Date: Oct 2, 2026
If you’re in America, Chicago and Philadelphia are often practical places to explore because they have large transit systems, walkable neighborhoods, and housing options that can be less expensive than the highest-cost car-free markets.
Other cities that may work for some households include Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Portland, Baltimore, and Jersey City.
Plan Before You Move
However, the best fit for you depends on rent, job location, mobility needs, weather, and how often transit runs near your home. It also depends heavily on the neighborhood, and not just the city.
Before moving, compare your full monthly costs and not just rent alone. Look for a location near reliable transit, groceries, health care, work or school, and other everyday needs. A higher-rent apartment near frequent transit may cost less than a cheaper place that requires a car payment, insurance, fuel, parking, maintenance, and repairs. Transportation is one of the largest household expenses in the United States, and car ownership can add substantial ongoing costs.
